I frequently see marketing from a company that makes a product (a very lovely product!) that happens to be a not-so-cheap entirely-discretionary purchase… and I’ve just received marketing from a local hotel chain that struck me insofar as both companies are using this “Extended by Popular Demand” line.

And yet… both companies are CONSTANTLY offering sale prices.

I guess this whole notion of “wow, our sale is doing so well we just gotta keep it going” just doesn’t ring true to me. I understand that there is plenty of psychologizing going on between businesses and consumers. They try to create urgency and excitement. And that obviously works. But for how long, and to what extent? And wouldn’t it be better if businesses figured out the “right” price point and made THAT their regular price?

The games… they’re so tiresome, don’t you think?!
